i have been mulling over what to do for easter this year.
i absolutely detest trinkets and such.
and that seems to be the typical easter basket filler.
and candy.
i am a mean mom and only let my kids have candy almost never.
and, i don't like having to store away holiday items.
no space.
i perused some sites and there are a lot of super sewers and crafters that i'm sure started their easter projects on february 15th.
i am
a: not that organized
b: not a sewer/crafter
so here is what i am thinking.
galvanized buckets for a basket.
this one is from ikea.
its cheap, and close to my house.
and we always use buckets.
outside, inside, plants, sand, toys, etc.
tie some ribbon around it and it will be pretty as a picture.
for the innards.
1. need (becks has a loose tooth and needs a tooth pillow)
2. spiritual (he is learning the articles of faith in primary so maybe something homemade like these.
3. want (he started baseball and wants a red baseball hat)
4. treat ( a treat. as in one treat. something yummy that can be consumed that morning and not over an entire day/week/month.)
5. toy ( a new sand toy. beach weather is coming up.)
is that too much?
too little?
i really get annoyed at stuff(crap) and want to avoid spending money on it.
am i a mean mom?
my mom was a super nice mom and it was the best seeing our big pastel easter baskets sitting out easter morning.
an easter dress, something churchy, maybe a stuffed animal, or book/cd when we were older.
but always lots of green shiny grass and and endless supply of little jelly beans hiding and rolling around in the tangled mess.
should i do the same???
or do i get them now when they are young and don't know that easter is about a day long sugar high?
what does the easter bunny bring to your house?

they are only little once. they only get one childhood. i don't think that means endless jellybeans, but i also don't think that means one treat.
you are a great mom. you will figure out what works best for your family.
I always hated the fake grass. I think you're on to something. One toy, one Treat, a cool T-shirt to fill the bottom of the bucket.
I tend to spoil my kids on the holidays - just like my mom did! I usually do a theme basket - like a sand pail for the basket, sand toys, a new swimsuit, little squirt guns, goggles, beach towel (that was the theme a couple of years ago). The candy is reserved for the plastic eggs that are hidden around the house and I'm one of those moms that lets them have a full day of sugar and then get rid of the candy the next day. I figure one day won't kill them! Then again I'm married to a man who loves candy so it's just as much for him as for them.
Thanks for the A of F cards. Jackson is getting baptized this year and we have been learning and memorizing each of the Articles of Faith for FHE. Those will be great for his Easter basket. I like to give candy and something fun, but I also like to put stuff in the bucket that is spiritual and centers on the real reason for the season.
Yeah, I am not much for junk and trinkets either. Ethan has only a few candies that he likes - so that helps. Last year's basket was a new t-shirt, matching game (that I had forgot to give him for Christmas), window markers, goldfish crackers and red licorice (his fave candy at the time) - and he gets a new tie (or shirt and tie if he needs a new shirt). Pretty simple, though. This year I want to include something spiritual as well, but otherwise it will probably be similar to what you're proposing - something needed, something wanted (i.e. toy) and a treat. I do like to put it in an actual "Easter" basket - we reuse them every year.
I like your idea! I want simple too. I figure they will get plenty of candy and trinkets from grandparents, church and school. We also do our easter baskets on Saturday and get most of our fun stuff out of the way that day so Sunday can be centered more on the spiritual side of Easter.

Asher doesn't even play with toys or stuff, so I get annoyed when I spend money on junk he doesn't play with and then he ends up playing with the laundry basket and his leggos. I don't buy toys anymore.

i am ALWAYS all about useful stuff, myself. that being said, we also put some candy in the baskets as well. in all honesty, though, the list of stuff you mentioned would be enough to make any kid happy i'm sure!
i hate junk. i throw everything away. but, i think the buckets are perf. and chic.
the one thing i really struggle with is actually giving my kids stuff. i have the biggest fear of being overindulgent but it's really hard to explain that to a 5 and 7 year old. indulgence is the language of "love" at that age. maybe a mcdonald's gift card for an ice cream cone?
I don't give my kids easter baskets. We dye eggs outside at grandma's on Saturday. On Sunday the easter bunny comes and hides their eggs. They get an empty basket to fill with the eggs they find on the easter egg hunt. All the dyed eggs go into the trash at the end of the day. There's also some filled eggs but they just have a little candy or money in them. My favorite easter baskets were the ones my mom sent to me at college- the grass was nice green cash :)
