We have wanted to get Becks off the bink for awhile now but realized it was not going to happen while Marley was on the bink because they sleep in the same bed, and a 2, almost 3 year old could not handle the temptation of having a bink lying in bed next to him, and not yank it out of his sister's mouth.
My 3 year old is not going to sleep with a bink though.
That's when I read Lizzie's blog and knew the time was now. I asked her how she did it and thought I'd give it a go.
So, a few days ago, the kids woke up from a nap and we found out that the shark had eaten the ends off all the binks.
Becks was really thoughtful for a moment, and then he picked up the shark and started hitting it while yelling "no, no shark. Bad shark." Marley was confused. So, we are in the process of reminding them that the shark ate their binks when they ask for them.
The hard part about this is that there has been 20-30 min. of screaming at night, pounding on the door, drama. It kills me. I feel like I've got a new baby all over again. And the 2 hour nap we all take at 1:00 every afternoon has been a nightmare. So, they are doing really well not asking for them, but on the flip side, we are essentially having to sleep train them all over again so they can learn to be soothed and fall asleep without the bink.
It was a life saver for us with new babies, but I am seriously debating weather I'm even going to introduce it to number 3.

Coming from someone who never introduced a binky to her first child, I think giving them a binky is WAAAAAY better than having them find their thumb or finger instead. Which is what Gavin did. And unfortunately, you can't have a shark come bite the end off his thumb....the kid is 5 and we are still battling.
Be One with the Bink, Momma!
I wish I had something to er, well, mom just hit me. Nevermind.
Make the Bad Shark give the binks back!
FREE THE BINKS
or should we remind everyone about your banky?
I took my son's binky away when he was 2 and a half and he stopped taking naps. It was awful, but I didn't give it back to him. I guess that is the trade. No binky, no naps ever again.
It gets better eventually! I took Ellie's away when she was 18 months and after a long week..she was back to normal sleep. Although I have a few for this new baby and I keep finding them in HER mouth.
It's "horror" stories like these that make me grateful Ethan never took to a binky... or his thumb or fingers for that matter. It was rough sometimes when we knew we couldn't rely on it, but it's SO NICE to have a 2 1/2 year old with no emotional ties to binkies! Good luck with the shark tactic!
i totally understand. we call them "pluggies" in our house, and sophie can't live without hers. i dread the day when i finally muscle up and pull the plug. in theory sophie only has hers at nap and bedtime, but i've gotten really lax about it since she's been sick, and hey i'm all about not hearing her scream and freak out on an all day long basis!
i'll have to keep the shark trick in mind for when the day finally comes. good luck getting through the sleep issues!
I'm with Beckham...BAD shark, BAD shark!
Sleep is just too underrated...I'm too selfish..I will do anything to have sleep! It just makes everyone happy.
Hoping you do not become Sleepless in San Pedro!
That tied my stomach into a knot because both my kids are addicted to the binkies too. Please give them back! (Then I won't have to feel guilty for keeping my kids on 'em :)
